SEED QUALITY OF SOYBEAN AS INFLUENCED BY POD POSITION AND THEIR SUBSEQUENT EFFECT ON YIELD

 Abstract

 Effect of pod position on seed quality and their subsequent effect on soybean yield were tested during rabi seasons of 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. In 2007-08, seed quality of pods at top, middle and bottom nodes of three-soybean varieties/line (BARI Soybean-5, Sohag and Amber) were evaluated in the laboratory while their subsequent effect on yield were evaluated in the field in 2008-09. Seeds in pods at different nodes showed significant influence on seed size, protein and oil content. Seeds of top nodes were much heavier than those of middle and bottom nodes. Protein content was significantly higher in seeds of top nodes (39.62%) than those of middle (39.08%) and bottom nodes (38.38%) but the oil content followed a reverse trend. Higher protein content was recorded in Amber (39.55%) but higher oil content was recorded in BARI soybean-5 (18.80%). Both pod position and variety did not show any significant influence on vigor index. However, comparatively higher vigor index (8.00) was recorded in seeds of top nodes and also in Amber (8.06). Variety did not show any significant difference in yield. Crop grown with the seeds of different nodes also did not show any significant influence on yield but the seeds of top nodes gave 7-13% higher yield than those of other nodes.
