Abstract
The experiment was conducted at the field of Spices Research Center of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi seasons of 2008-09 and 2009-10 to find out the suitable variety of chili for intercropping with sweet gourd. Hundred percent population of five chili varieties, viz. BARI morich 1, Byne morich, Comilla morich, Jamalpur morich and Manikgonj morich were intercropped with 100% sweet gourd. Sole sweet gourd was also included in this study for comparison. The highest yield of chili (1.67 t ha-1) was recorded from Manikgonj morich. Yield reduction of sweet gourd due to intercropping varied from 2.1 to 5.7% and it was minimum (2.1%) when intercropped with Manikgonj morich. The highest sweet gourd equivalent yield (25.35 t ha -1) was obtained from sweet gourd + Manikgonj morich combination. This combination also gave the highest gross return (Tk 253500 ha-1), gross margin (Tk 180000 ha-1) and benefit cost ratio (3.45). Theresults revealed that the Manikgonj morich is suitable for intercropping with sweetgourd for getting maximum economic return.
