Abstract

A field experiment was carried out to study the effect of sowing dates on growth attributes and yield of blackgram (Vigna mungo L. Hepper). Seeds of two blackgram varieties (BARI Mash-1 and B-10) were sown with four different dates (03 August, 13 August, 23 August and 02 September, 2006). Results indicated that total dry matter and leaf area index were increased with increasing plant age then again decreased. Leaf area ratio and leaf weight ratio were decreased with increasing plant age. Leaf area index, dry matter production and harvest index seemed to be important in improving seed yield of blackgram. Yield and yield components were higher in local variety B-10 than the BARI Mash-1. Plant height, seeds plant-1, pod dry weight plant-1, total dry matter plant-1 and seed yield were higher in 13 August sowing than the other sowings.
