NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN OF THE
SELECTED MONGA AREAS IN BANGLADESH

Abstract
The
study was conducted among 372 households to assess the nutritional status, life style and food intake patterns of
women and children in selected Monga areas in Bangladesh among May to August,
2010. Economic hardship was
extensive in the Monga areas, literacy rate was very poor in both male and
female. About 55.4% of the respondent’s
husbands were day labor/ farm labor among which only 9.7% was skilled labor.
Nutritional status was
also low. Majority of the respondents were suffering from varying degrees of
choric energy deficiency (CED) of which 9.1%,
14.2% and 54.6% were in CED3, CED2 and CED1
respectively. According to Mid Uppon Arm Circumference (MUAC), 39.7% was found
severe malnourished. The average energy intake was 1520 Kcal person-1day‑1
with SD value ±137 Kcal which fulfill only 72 % of Recommended Dietary
Allowance (RDA). The results revealed that most of the respondents were
seriously suffering from minimum income, lack of employment opportunities,
illness and different degrees of malnutrition in Monga areas.
