Abstract
An experiment was conducted at the farms of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jamalpur and Agricultural Research Station, Burirhat during November to October of 2006-07 and 2007-08 to find out optimum time of planting mukhikachu as a relay crop with hybrid maize. Five dates of relaying (100, 110, 120, 130 and 140 days after sowing of maize) were compared with monoculture mukhikachu and monoculture hybrid maize. In both the years at all the locations, yield of hybrid maize was the highest in sole crop but it was not reduced significantly due to relay cropping of mukhikachu with it. Yield of sole mukhikachu was also the highest but it was identical to that of mukhikachu relayed with hybrid maize at 100 or 110 days after sowing (DAS) of hybrid maize. Relaying mukhikachu with hybrid maize increased total productivity in terms of maize equivalent yield (MEY). The higher MEY (23.12 – 30.73 t/ha) and land equivalent ratio (1.76-1.92) were obtained when mukhikachu was relayed with hybrid maize at 100 or 110 DAS of maize. Higher gross return (Tk 231.2 thousand - Tk 307.3 thousand/ha), gross margin (Tk 179.4 thousand - Tk 252.9 thousand/ha) and benefit cost ratio (4.46 – 5.65) were also obtained from the same treatment combinations.
