Abstract
The
experiment was carried out at the research field and laboratory of Seed
Technology Division, BARI, Gazipur during rabi season of 2015-16 to find out
the effect of seed soaking in water on
the germination and plant establishment of French bean in the field. The experiment was laid out in
Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with replications where treatments of
seeds soaked for different durations of 6 hrs, 12 hrs, 24 hrs, 36 hrs, 48 hrs
and non soaked seeds were assigned randomly to the experimental units of raised
bed measuring 3m long and 1m wide. Results showed that time to emergence, leaf
length, leaf breadth, and seed yield were significantly affected by the soaking
duration. Among the treatments non soaked seeds or seeds soaked for short
periods of time (6 hours) showed better performance in case of germination
percentage, seedling dry weight (g), vigor index, and yield (t/ha). However,
The highest germination percentage (98.66%) and (97.33%) were observed from non
soaked seeds (T6) and short durations of soaking (T1) and
The maximum Vigor index (18.98) was observed from T6 followed by T1.
The highest yield (1.81t/ha) was produced from T6 treatments which
was followed by T1 treatments.
