Abstract
The experiment was conducted in the research field of the Department of Agricultural Botany farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from November 2015 to March 2016 to screen out potato varieties grown under salt stress. The treatment consisted of four potato varieties viz. V1=BARI Potato-7 (Diamant), V2=BARI Potato-25 (Asterix), V3=BARI Potato-28 (Lady Rosetta), V4=BARI Potato-29 (Courage) and four different salinity levels viz. T0=without salt (control), T1=4 dS/m, T2=8 dS/m, T3=12 dS/m. The two factors experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. The plant height (35.17cm), membrane stability (82.60%), proline content (14.21ยต mole-1FW), number of tuber plant-1 (18.67) and weight of tuber plant-1 (396.70g) were highest in variety of BARI Potato-25 (Asterix) but BARI Potato-29 (Courage) showed lowest performance under saline condition. The highest yield of tuber plant-1 (396.70 g) was observed in Asterix with control which was statistically similar and was with followed by Asterix with 4 dSm-1 and also gave better yield in 8 dSm-1. Considering the above results, the genotype Asterix was screened as tolerant to salinity at moderate level.
Key words: Potato varieties, yield performance, salinity, stress.
